KAZAK RUSSIA: hand-knotted rugs from the region north and west of Lake Sevan in the south-western Caucasus. These rugs were originally named after the village of Kazak (Azerbaijan), where they were made until around 1925. They are the best-known and most popular of the Caucasian rugs. They are characterised, among other things, by their long pile and the fact that they sometimes have up to eight weft threads between their rows of knots. These rugs, which are knotted relatively far apart, have a high quality wool pile, which gives them good strength. Most are around Dozar size (around 200 x 120 cm) and are often remarkably wide in relation to their length. The colours are bright and the designs large and original.
